The citation engine
A crawler indexing sources. The ones that get cited crystallize. Click anywhere to send a wave.
How answer engines decide what to cite
The picture above is the argument. A crawler moves across a field of sources; some get cited and some do not. Here is what it is showing, what it deliberately is not, and why the difference matters.
What the picture shows
A crawler moves across the field emitting index waves. Sources flare when a wave reaches them. Some get cited: a stream runs from the source to the answer, and that source crystallizes — a faint spark becomes a faceted form that grows with every citation it earns.
Three states, not one score
Being cited, being named without a link, and being absent are three different outcomes with three different fixes. Most reporting blends them into a single percentage, which hides the distinction that matters most: a brand mentioned without attribution has a different problem from one that never appeared.
What this is not
The visual is an illustration of a concept, not a simulation of any real system. Nobody outside those companies knows how Perplexity, ChatGPT, or Google’s overviews actually rank and select sources. This page describes the shape of the problem, not the internals of anyone’s product.
